Levi Ice Fishing Tours

Every winter the lakes around Levi freeze thick enough to walk on, and drilling a hole to fish through the ice is about as Finnish as an afternoon gets. We compared five trips from the village, from a two-and-a-half-hour drive to a forest lake to a five-hour snowmobile safari with soup cooked over an open fire. Each one comes with its price and its catch.

  • Ice season: roughly December to AprilThe trips run once the lakes are frozen solid, and the milder light of March and April is easiest on cold hands
  • Book early in your stayA deep cold snap can make a day on the ice miserable, so fish in the first days of your trip and keep a spare one

In a hurry? Our top pick is Safartica's snowmobile safari with ice fishing and lunch: ~$234 a person for five hours, with the sled ride out, an afternoon at the holes and soup from the fire. Book it here.

Which Levi ice fishing tour should you book?

Say a friend heading to Levi asked us which ice fishing trip to take. Over a hot chocolate in the village, this is what we would tell them.

For most visitors the trip to book is Safartica's snowmobile safari with ice fishing and an outdoor lunch, from ~$234. You ride a snowmobile out along frozen water, learn to drill a hole and rig a short rod, and eat Lappish soup cooked on an open fire. It has the strongest record of the five, 4.9 from 200+ reviews.

Short on time or money? Keo Wilderness' salmon soup trip costs ~$99 for two and a half hours with a heated shelter, and Safartica's trip by car at ~$122 lends you a full set of winter clothing. For sunset photos, Beyond Arctic's small group is ~$117. Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park's sled trip at ~$190 reaches a lake with no road.

No guide can promise a fish. Check what each trip really includes and when the ice is at its best, see how the hours are spent, then read the small print we pulled out before you pay.

Our pick

The ice fishing day we would book: Safartica

It turns ice fishing into a proper Lapland outing, with a sled ride out and a meal on the ice. It also carries the most reviews and the best score of the five, though the group can be a big one.

You meet at the Safartica office in Levi 20 minutes before the start, where the winter clothing is handed out. If you are staying within 10 km (6 miles), you can ask for a pickup at least 48 hours ahead.

Two people share each snowmobile and ride along frozen waters to a fishing spot in the wilderness. The guide shows you how to drill the hole and how to set up the rod and the bait, then leaves you to it.

While you fish, a pot of Lappish soup heats over the guide's fire, and whatever you pull up can go in with it. Hot drinks come before the ride home. The whole trip takes about five hours.

How the five hours run, step by step

This is the order the listing gives. Deep snow or hard frost can stretch any leg of it, and so can the pace of the slowest driver.

Out of Levi

  • Meet at the Safartica office and change into the winter clothing
  • Snowmobile along frozen waters, two riders per sled
  • Arrive at a fishing spot out in the wilderness

On the ice

  • Drill the hole and bait the rod, then fish
  • Soup from the fire, with your catch if you have one
  • Hot drinks, then the ride back to the office

What the price covers

The fare pays for the sled and the gear, plus the meal. Getting to the office and any tip are up to you.

Included
  • Winter clothing for the day
  • A snowmobile shared by two people
  • Ice fishing gear and a guide in English
  • Lappish soup lunch and hot drinks
Not included
  • A sled to yourself
  • Pickup without 48 hours' notice
  • Tips
  • A fish on the line

Between us, before you go

A word from one cold-fingered angler to another. Whoever drives the snowmobile needs a driver's licence, so pack it. The listing also says that the speed depends on the weather and on how well the drivers handle their sleds.

Children under 12 cannot join, and the group can run to 50, so the guide moves between holes rather than staying at yours. A thin pair of gloves under the thick ones helps with the bait. Our guide to dressing for the lake covers the rest.

Why it beats the other snowmobile trip

Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park's sled trip costs ~$190 for three hours with no meal. For ~$234 Safartica gives you five hours with a fire-cooked lunch, and it scores 4.9 against 4.4. Snowmobile or minivan weighs the sled trips against the drives.

What you give up is the small group. Safartica's day is the sociable one, with sleds lined up on the ice.

Who we would not send on it

Families with children under 12, whom the listing turns away. Travelers who would rather not ride a sled in deep cold, who will be happier in Safartica's warm car. And anyone on a tight budget, who gets a good taste of the ice for less on Keo Wilderness' salmon soup trip.

Book it if

You want one full Lapland afternoon rather than a quick try. A sled ride out and time at the holes fill the day, with a hot meal on the ice in between. It suits couples and groups of friends, and teenagers who like to drive.

Skip it if

The day itself

How a Levi ice fishing trip works

Every trip on this page drills the same kind of hole in the same kind of ice. What differs is how you reach the lake and what keeps you warm once you are there.

Style · by snowmobile

Out to a wilderness lake on a sled

Safartica, Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park

3–5 ha sled ride each way, the afternoon on the ice

The ride is half the fun, and it reaches lakes no car can. The catch is the cold on the sled, the driver's licence the driver needs, and a higher price than the drives.

Style · by minivan or car

A short drive to a forest lake

Beyond Arctic, Keo Wilderness, Safartica by car

2.5–3.5 habout 20 minutes on the road, most of the trip at the holes

Cheaper and warmer on the way, and easier with children. Each has a fire or a heated shelter close by, or a warm car. You give up the sled ride and the feeling of being far out in the wild.

How to choose

How to pick the right ice fishing trip

The ice is the same for all five. What differs is the ride out, the food by the hole and how long you are away from the village.

Time

Two and a half hours for the shortest drives, three for the sled-only trip, five for the safari with lunch. Fitting two trips into a stay.

Ride

Two trips go by snowmobile and the other three by road. The sled is colder and needs a licensed driver. Sled or seat.

Food

Fire-cooked soup with Safartica's safari, salmon soup with Keo, a campfire with snacks with Beyond Arctic. The other two serve drinks only. Lunch on the ice.

Budget

From ~$99 for Keo's salmon soup trip to ~$234 for the safari with lunch. Every price in one table.

Children

The safari takes nobody under 12. The short drives suit families better because shelter and warmth are always close by. Ice fishing with kids.

Group size

Beyond Arctic and Keo Wilderness take eight at most. Safartica's car trip takes up to 20 and its safari up to 50. What the group size costs.

Before you go

Eight things about ice fishing trips that no listing puts in big letters

None of these sits at the top of a booking page. Each one can decide whether your afternoon ends warm and happy or with numb toes and an empty line.

What you should know

  1. A fish is never promised. Every guide does their best, and Beyond Arctic moves the group between holes when nothing bites. Some afternoons the lake stays quiet anyway. What you might pull up.
  2. Standing still is colder than skiing. You spend hours sitting or kneeling at a hole on open ice, so dress warmer than you would for the slopes. Layer by layer.
  3. Clothing is not always lent. Safartica's two trips and the snowmobile park lend winter clothing; Viator lists thermal clothing on Keo's. Beyond Arctic's listing does not mention it, so ask before you go.
  4. The snowmobile driver needs a licence. On Safartica's safari two people share a sled and the driver must carry a driver's licence. Passengers ride behind. Sled or minivan.
  5. Children under 12 cannot join the safari. Safartica's five-hour trip turns them away. The short drives with a fire or a heated shelter suit families. With kids.
  6. Pickup is not automatic. Safartica's safari picks up within 10 km only if you ask 48 hours ahead, and Beyond Arctic collects guests from outside the Levi center.
  7. Only three trips feed you. Safartica's safari cooks soup on the fire and Keo serves salmon soup. Beyond Arctic has snacks by the campfire. Eat before the other two. Lunch on the ice.
  8. Phones die in the cold. Batteries drain fast below about −15 °C (5 °F). Keep yours in an inside pocket and take photos in short bursts.

★★★★★Snowmobile + lunch, 5 h

We shared one snowmobile and swapped at the halfway stop, which my husband pretended not to enjoy. Out on the lake the guide drilled the first hole with a hand auger and let us do the next ones, which is harder work than it looks. I caught one small perch, he caught nothing. The soup came off the open fire while we were still fishing, and the perch went into it. Five hours went by without anyone checking a phone.

Good to know

Why Finns fish through the ice, and what you are doing out there

Five minutes of reading makes the auger and the tiny rod, and the long wait beside a hole in the snow, much easier to enjoy.

Ice fishing, pilkkiminen in Finnish, is one of the oldest winter pastimes in the country. Levi sits in the municipality of Kittilä, some 170 km (105 miles) above the Arctic Circle, with frozen lakes in every direction once winter sets in.

01A hole the width of a hand

The hole is drilled with a hand auger, a long steel screw with a blade at the end, and turning it is warmer work than it looks. Beyond Arctic's listing puts the ice at around a meter thick. The hole only needs to be wide enough for a small fish to come up through it.

02A rod the length of your forearm

Ice fishing rods are short, because you sit right over the hole. A small lure or bait goes down on a thin line. You lift it and let it drop gently to catch the eye of a fish below. The guide shows you the rhythm. What might bite.

03What lives under the ice

Perch and pike are common in Lapland lakes (whitefish too), and perch are the usual first catch for beginners. Fish move slowly in cold water, which is why guides change holes when nothing bites. Any catch is a bonus, never part of the deal.

The moment most people remember is the first small tug on a line they had stopped expecting anything from.

04The fire is part of it

Finnish ice fishing has always come with a fire on the shore or on the ice, and a kettle with something hot to eat. Three of the five trips keep that tradition with soup or snacks. Lunch on the ice compares them.

05Light that changes fast

Around midwinter Levi has its polar night, when the sun does not clear the horizon for a few weeks and midday is a long blue twilight. By March the days are long and bright, and the low sun over the ice makes the photos most people come home with. The best weeks.

06Free to fish, within limits

Finland lets anyone fish with a simple rod and line in most lakes without a permit, which is why locals sit on the ice with nothing but a stool and an auger. On a tour the operator takes care of the gear and the spot. The rules in plain words.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about ice fishing in Levi

Fourteen questions we hear again and again, with the full answer.

How much does an ice fishing tour in Levi cost?

The five tours on this page start at ~$99 per person for Keo Wilderness' salmon soup trip, with Beyond Arctic at ~$117 and Safartica's car trip at ~$122. The snowmobile trips cost ~$190 without a meal and ~$234 for the five-hour safari with lunch. Every price and extra is in our cost guide.

Which ice fishing tour should I pick?

Safartica's five-hour safari suits most people best, since it has the top score and turns the fishing into a whole outing. With young children or a smaller budget, Keo Wilderness' salmon soup trip. Without a snowmobile, Safartica's trip by car.

When is the ice fishing season in Levi?

Roughly from December to April, once the lakes are frozen solid. February and March bring thick ice and fast-lengthening days, and March is usually the most comfortable for sitting still outdoors. From about May to November there are no trips on the ice. The season in detail.

How long does an ice fishing trip take?

Two and a half hours on Keo Wilderness' and Safartica's car trips, three on Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park's sled trip and three and a half with Beyond Arctic. Safartica's safari with lunch takes five. Most of that time is spent on the ice.

Will I catch a fish?

Maybe. The guides know their lakes and move holes when nothing bites, but no tour can promise a catch. Perch are the usual first fish. Go for the afternoon on the ice and treat a fish as a bonus. What bites under the ice.

What happens to the fish I catch?

On Safartica's safari your catch can go into the soup the guide cooks on the fire, according to the listing. On the other trips, ask your guide on the day, since the listings do not say.

Do I need a fishing licence?

Not for a guided trip; the operator provides the gear and the spot. Plain rod-and-line fishing is free for everyone in most Finnish lakes; reels and lures on your own come under separate rules. The rules explained.

Is warm clothing included?

Yes on Safartica's two trips and on Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park's. Viator also lists thermal clothing on Keo Wilderness' trip. Beyond Arctic's listing does not mention clothing, so ask. Wear wool layers underneath on any trip. What to wear.

Can children come ice fishing?

Not on Safartica's snowmobile safari, which takes nobody under 12. The short trips by minivan or car suit families better, especially Keo Wilderness' with its heated shelter. Check the age rules on each listing before you book. Ice fishing with kids.

Do I need a licence to drive the snowmobile?

On Safartica's safari the driver needs a driver's licence, and two people share each sled, so one of you can ride as the passenger. Bring the licence to the office. Snowmobile or minivan.

Is food included?

Safartica's safari includes a Lappish soup lunch cooked on an open fire, and Keo Wilderness serves salmon soup with hot drinks and cookies. Beyond Arctic has hot drinks and snacks by a campfire. The other two trips include hot drinks at most, so eat before. Lunch on the ice.

What if it is extremely cold?

The trips run in serious cold, and the listings do not name a temperature at which they stop. Dress in layers and take breaks by the fire or in the heated shelter. Fish early in your stay so a spare day remains. When the frost bites.

Can I see the northern lights on an ice fishing trip?

These are daytime trips, so it is not part of the plan. In the dark weeks around midwinter an afternoon trip ends in twilight, but no listing promises auroras, and you would book a separate evening trip for them.

Can I cancel an ice fishing tour for free?

Yes. All five can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before on GetYourGuide and Viator, which lets you check the temperature forecast before you commit.
